884,126. Crown caps. FORDS (FINSBURY) Ltd. May 26, 1959 [June 11, 1958 (2) ; July 9, 1958; Aug. 28, 1958 ; Nov. 24, 1958], Nos. 18663/58, 18664/58, 22029/58 and 27653/58. Class 125(3). A crown cap has an annular sealing gasket 5 of a resilient or deformable sealing compound, e.g. a rubberized compound, applied internally in a semi-liquid state so that it does not adhere firmly to the cap but, under internal gas pressure from the contents of a bottle to which the cap is secured, is able to deform by sliding on the surface of the cap and thereby to increase its sealing action. The sealing compound may be squirted on through a nozzle, as the cup is rotated, and subsequently dried. The interior of the cap may be coated with a protective coating, e.g. a lacquer made from epoxy-phenolic resins to which the gasket will not adhere ; and a protective coating of, e.g. vinyl lacquer, which is adhesive, may be applied to the interior of the cap at the same time as the compound, a drop of the lacquer being dispersed from a point at the centre of the cap by centrifugal force but not so far that it covers the sealing compound. In a modification, Fig. 6, a second gasket 10 of sealing compound is applied, this gasket being adhered to the skirt on a vinyl lacquer. Specification 807,074 is referred to.
