Apparatus for cutting screw threads of varying pitch and diameter comprises a tool 21 carried on a cross-slide 20 the movement of which to cut a tapered thread is provided by an inclined guide-bar 23. The cross-slide is mounted on a saddle 18 moved by a cam 27 rotated in unison with the headstock spindle. The cam profile is such as to give a non-uniform pitch to the thread and a rapid return.
