[Also in Group XXIV] In a screw-cutting lathe, a thread of varying pitch or depth is cut by a single-point tool, the movements of which are controlled by cams. The longitudinal movement of a carriage 1 of the lathe is controlled by a roller 9 which cooperates with a cam 10 secured to a shaft 11, the opposite end of the shaft carrying a second cam 12 which controls the transverse movement of a carriage 3, by levers 14, 18, 20. The depth of cut of the tool 5 is controlled by a cam 19, intermittently rotated through a ratchet-and-pawl, by a cam 16 on the shaft 11, and the shape at the bottom of the thread is determined by a cam 22. It is stated that two screw-threads of opposite hands can be produced in a single operation. Specification 640,142 is referred to.
