Abstract

883,864. Screw-cutting lathes. BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. June 23, 1958 [June 25, 1957; April 18, 1958], No. 20035/58. Class 83 (3). Apparatus for cutting screw threads, variable in pitch and diameter, comprises a lead screw 39, Fig. 1, for moving a saddle 37, the latter being provided with a cutting tool, and means for driving the lead screw at an angular velocity proportional to that of the workpiece and for displacing the lead screw at a variable rate, the cutting tool being moved transversely during the tool traverse to vary the diameter. The lead screw 39 may be moved in its bearings 40, 41 by a cam 44 engaging one end the cam being driven from the lead screw. Alternatively the cam may be driven from the saddle by lever mechanism 47, 48, Fig. 2. A guide-bar (not shown) may be used to move the tool transversely but other known means of profile turning may be employed. Specifications 786,652, 799,028 and 806,553 are referred to.
