544,576. Rectilinear-motion bearings. ATKINS, H. F. Dec. 20, 1940, No. 15866/41. Divided out of 545,998, [Group XXII]. [Class 12 (i)] [Also in Groups XXII and XXIII] In a machine such as a screw thread grinding or cutting machine, having a saddle fed by lead screw and nut mechanism, the lead screw is supported on one or both sides of the nut by a travelling supporting device. The lead screw 4 is mounted in bearings 7, 8. A surface 12 beneath the screw carries a movable support 13 having parts 13a, 13c which support the lead screw and provided with a pinion 14 engaging a fixed lower rack 15 and an upper rack 16 movable with the slide 5. Thus the support 13 is traversed at half the speed of the slide the position at one end of the traverse being shown in dotted lines. The parts 13a, 13c may bear on the screw through antifriction or self-lubricating surfaces. In a modification the movement of the slide may be imparted to the slide 13 through flexible band mechanism.
