Abstract
168,060. Bechler, A. Aug. 17, 1920. Turning.-In an automatic screw-cutting lathe the tool carriage may be automatically fed after each cut in a direction adjustably inclined to the work axis according to the angle of the thread to be cut. The tool carriage i slides on a dovetail guide on a graduated member h secured to the cross-slide b by bolts h<1> and angularly adjustable about a short central spindle n, the upper end of which carries spur teeth l engaging a rack k secured to the tool carriage. The spindle n is rotated to feed the tool by means of a worm-wheel l<1> engaging a worm c on a spindle m mounted on the cross-slide and carrying a ratchet-wheel d operated automatically at each traverse by stops f, f<1> on a longitudinal rod. In operation, the slide h is first angularly adjusted, so that the tool is advanced as indicated in Fig. 5, only one of the cutting-edges being operative.
