Abstract

A composition for detecting glucose comprises (1) glucose oxidase, (2) sodium, potassium or ammonium iodide, (3) sodium, potassium or ammonium molybdate and (4) an indicator responsive to hydrogen peroxide in the presence of (2) and (3) above. Indicators specified are 2, 7-diaminofluorene, o-tolidine, o-dianisidine and leucoindophenols. In the examples, in compositions to be applied to bibulous materials, other materials are also present, viz. polyvinyl alcohol (to maintain the indicator in suspension), ethanol, glycine, gelatine, a dye (uniform background colour) and a phosphate buffer (preferably giving a pH of 4-7,5); algin may also be present and the polyvinyl alcohol and buffer may be replaced by a cation exchange cellulose.
