Abstract
Solid and liquid vitamin compositions comprise cyanocobalamin (Vitamin B12) and ascorbic acid and, as stabilizer, an organic or inorganic nitrite in a concentration equivalent to from about 0.0005% to about 0.1% by weight of NO2 of the composition. Specified nitrites are those of the alkali and alkaline earth metals (sodium nitrite is preferred), alkyl nitrites and acid nitrites e.g. nitrous acid. The compositions may be in solid form e.g. a tablet or in liquid form e.g. an aqueous solution or an emulsion. It is stated when the solvent in liquid preparations contains about 60% or more glycerin or about 50% or more propylene glycol, the stability of the cyanocobalumin in the presence of ascorbic acid and nitrite is enhanced. Other water or oil soluble vitamins may also be incorporated in the compositions these specified being Vitamin A (palmitate), Vitamin D3, F riboflavin, thiamine (hydrochloride), pantothenyl alcohol, nicotinamide, pyridoxine (hydrochloride), folic acid, calcium pentothanate. Ferrous gluconate may also be present.
