Abstract
882,325. Lathe details. SCOTTISH MACHINE TOOL CORPORATION Ltd. Feb. 24, 1958 [Nov. 23, 1956], No. 35888/56. Class 83 (3). A profiling attachment for lathes particularly suitable for turning the treads and flanges of railway wheels, comprises a tool-supporting member 1, Figs. 2 and 3, adapted to be secured to the top-slide 4A of a lathe carriage. A carrierbar 9, Fig. 2, is adjustably secured on pillar bolts 5 secured to the transverse slide of the carriage on which the top-slide 4A is movable by a handle 18 in a direction mainly parallel to the lathe axis. The carrier bar is provided with a doubleedged cam-piece 10, Fig. 3, which is engaged by cam-followers 11 and 12 secured to tool-holders 2 and 3 respectively movable towards and away from the work in guides within the attachment. The followers are forced against the cam profiles during cutting by individual fluid pressure cylinders 13 and 14 operating on the tool holders. A feeler attached to the carrier-bar is brought up to a datum face on the work to position the carrier bar at the commencement of an operation on a railway wheel.
