Abstract
704,845. Planing machine details. THOMAS, R. E., and RODWAY, Ltd., G. Aug. 10, 1950 [May 10, 1949], No. 12468/49. Class 83 (3) A tool-holder assembly for planing, shaping &c. machines coprises a rigid tool bar having a parallel-sided slot whose walls are at an angle to the direction of feed of the tool and a tool block to carry the tool mounted with a limited freedom of pivoted movement in the slot and about an axis at an angle normal to the plane in which the tool holder is moved relative to the work and the cutting stroke of the tool. The tool-bar 1, Fig. 1, is mounted in a tool-head which is moved relative to the work in a plane parallel to the plane YY, Fig. 3, and normal to the surface 2 to be machined. The tool-carrying end of this bar has a parallel-sided slot 3 which extends across its full width at an angle to the plane of relative movement. A tool block 4 with a tool-holding opening 5 is mounted within the slot and is pivoted on a pin 8 normal to the side walls of the slot. Loading stop members 9, 10, Fig. 1, take the thrust reaction during cutting and a light spring returns the tool to cutting position after it has been deflected by the work on the return stroke.
