Abstract
6-aminopenicillanic acid is recovered from aqueous solutions thereof by extracting the aqueous solution with a lesser volume of a water-immiscible organic solvent having dissolvent therein a secondary amine of the general formula: <FORM:0882278/IV (b)/1> p wherein R is an aliphatic group containing from 10 to 14 carbon atoms and R1, R2 and R3 are each alkyl groups containing a total of 11 to 14 carbon atoms, the secondary amine being liquid at room temperatures and separating the organic solvent phase containing the major portion of the 6-aminopenicillanic acid. When the aqueous solution is a fermentation broth, a small amount of benzaldehyde may be added to the broth prior to the extraction. The organic solvent may be n-butanol, isobutyl, n-amyl or cyclohexyl alcohol or methyl isobutyl ketone and the secondary amine may be added as a mixture of amines each of the general formula: <FORM:0882278/IV (b)/2> or <FORM:0882278/IV (b)/3>
