Abstract

6-aminopenicillanic acid is recovered from aqueous solutions thereof by extracting the aqueous solution at a pH of between 1 and 3 with a lesser volume of a water-immiscible organic solvent having dissolved therein between 0.5% and 10% by weight of the aqueous solution of a compound of the general formula: <FORM:0882277/IV (b)/1> wherein R and R1 are each lower alkyl groups containing from 7 to 11 carbon atoms and M is a hydrogen atom or alkali metal radical, and separating the organic solvent phase containing the major portion of the 6-aminopenicillanic acid. The organic solvent may be methyl isobutyl ketone, n-butanol, butyl acetate, n-amyl acetate, isobutanol, n-amyl alcohol, isoamyl alcohol, diamyl ether, diisopropyl ether, ethyl isopropyl ketone, or ethyl tertiary butyl ketone, and the compound of the above formula may be di-2-ethylhexyl), di(1-methylheptyl) or di(1-methyl-4-ethylhexyl) sodium sulpho-succinate.
