Abstract

6-aminopenicillanic acid is recovered from aqueous solutions thereof by extracting the aqueous solution with a water-immiscible organic solvent incapable of reaction with 6-amino-penicillanic acid and acylating agents for 6-amino-penicillanic acid, the solvent having dissolved therein one or more secondary amines of the general formula <FORM:0893588/IV (b)/1> wherein R is an aliphatic group containing 10 to 14 carbon atoms and R1, R2 and R3 are each alkyl groups containing a total of 11 to 14 carbon atoms, and separating the organic solvent phase containing the 6-aminopenicillanic acid. The water-immiscible solvent may be chloroform, butyl acetate or kerosene, and the 6-aminopenicillanic acid may be separated and removed from the organic solvent phase, e.g. by extraction with water at a pH of 1 to 3, or the 6-aminopencillanic acid may be acylated in the solvent phase to a penicillin.
