Abstract

881,945. Printing on ceramic ware. SERVICE (ENGINEERS) Ltd. Feb. 20, 1958 [Feb. 20, 1957], No. 5670/57. Class 100(2) An offset printing apparatus, particularly for printing on ceramic ware, comprises an offset member 14 having two opposed deformable pads 16, 18 thereon which are joined together by rods slidable in holes in a shaft 8, and a flat circular plate 50 carrying two or more engraved designs thereon, whereby the member 14 may be depressed against the action of springs to enable the bottom pad to engage one of the designs on the plate 50. The plate 50 is connected by gearing 52, 54, 56, 60, 48 to the shaft 8, and the shaft 8 is adapted to be driven through a slip clutch comprising a disc 36 fixed to the shaft, and a power-driven disc 40 on a sleeve which is rotatable on the shaft. The disc 36 has notches in its periphery adapted to be engaged by one end of a latch 66 pivoted on the frame at 68: the other end of the latch has a spring-retained pawl 76 pivoted thereon which co-operates with abutments 32, 34 on the offset pads. Inking means (not shown) applies ink to the designs on the plate 50. In operation, assuming the top pad 16 has picked up an inked impression from the plate 50, an article to be decorated is pressed on to the pad 16. This printing operation causes the pad 18 to descend and contact an inked design on the plate 50, the abutment 34 on that pad flicking past the pawl 76 and not disturbing the latch 66. On removal of the decorated article, the member 14 moves upwardly, the abutment 34 trips the latch 66, the shaft 8 is rotated through an angle of 180 degrees, determined by an opposed notch on the disc 36, in which case the pad 18 is not uppermost. A device for presenting plate blanks to the offset pads comprises a ring-shaped support of rubber mounted on slides, the plate and support being urged downwardly by an elastic pad against the action of springs. The elastic pad may be pneumatically operated. Specification 763,572 is referred to.
