Abstract

A fertilizer comprises a water soluble nitrogen compound, such as ammonia, ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulphate or urea, and a filler consisting mainly of one or more aluminium silicates or potassium aluminium silicates possessing a cation exchange capacity of at least 35 milliequivalents and decomposable by mineral acids, such as montmorillonite, bentonite, vermiculite, glauconite or illite. In Examples (1) an aqueous suspension of the filler is brought into contact with gases containing oxides of nitrogen and the suspension neutralized with ammonia. The suspension may be used as such or preferably dried by infra-red radiation and granulated; (2) bentonite, glauconite, illite or vermiculite is mixed with a fused ammonium nitrate; (3) ammonium bentonite is produced by mixing ammonium nitrate and calcuim bentonite; (4) urea is mixed with calcium bentonite; (5) alkaline earth bentonite with about 60% montmorillonite content is pretreated with potassium monohydrogen phosphate before use as in (1) and (2). Alkaline earth bentonites may also be pretreated with other alkali metal salts, such as potassium chloride or sulphate.
