Abstract
Calcium or ammonium nitrate is treated with aqueous solutions of alkali metal silicates having a concentration not less than 4 per cent. and not more than 12 per cent., the quantity of silicate used being less than 1 per cent. based on the quantity of salt treated. The silicate solution may be employed during or after granulation or applied to the melted salt. An example compares the crushing strength and moisture absorption of ammonium nitrate treated with (1) powdered limestone followed by granulation, (2) adding chalk to the molten salt and spraying in air, (3) as in (2) followed by powdering the grain with infusorial silica, (4) as in (1) except that 6 kilograms of a 4 per cent. silicate solution per 100 kg. of fertilizer are added during granulation, (5) as in (1) but after granulation the salt is treated with 2 kgs. of a 12 per cent. silicate solution per 100 kgs. of fertilizer, (6) adding 2 kgs. of a 12 per cent. silicate solution per 100 kgs. of melted salt. Specifications 135,847 and 195,655, [both in Class 1 (ii)], are referred to.ALSO:Fertilizers particularly those where a weak base is combined with a strong acid are treated with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal silicate having a concentration of not less than 4 per cent and not more than 12 per cent so that the quantity of silicate used is less than 1 per cent used on the fertilizer. The silicate solution may be employed during or after granulation or mixed with a melted fertilizer salt, an example compares the working strength and moisture absorption of ammonium nitrate treated with (1) powdered limestone followed by granulation, (2) adding chalk to the molten salt and spraying in air, (3) as in (2) followed by powdering the grain with infusorial silica, (4) as in (1) except that 6 kilograms of a 4 per cent sodium silicate solution per 100 kilograms of fertilizer are added during granulation, (5) as in (1) but after granulation the salt was treated with 2 kg. of a 12 per cent silicate solution per 100 kg. of fertilizer, (6) adding 2 kg. of a 12 per cent silicate solution per 100 kgs. of the melted salt. Calcium nitrate may be similarly treated. Specifications 135,847 and 195,655, [both in Class 111], are referred to.
