Abstract
An aqueous fertilizer suspension is prepared by oxidizing ammonia to nitrogen oxides and contacting these with an aqueous slurry of a calcium-containing compound from the group: phosphate rock, limestone, and dolomite, or a mixture of two or more of the said calcium compounds, the aqueous slurry having a weight ratio of water to calcium compound in the range 0.5:1 to 3:1. The temperature of the slurry may be from 50 DEG F. to 80 DEG F. and it may flow through an absorber countercurrently to the mixture of nitrogen oxides, previously water-cooled. Excess nitrogen oxides in the acidulated slurry may be stripped therefrom. Part of the product obtained may be cooled to 80 DEG to 200 DEG F. and recycled to the absorber for further contact with nitrogen oxides. At least part of the aqueous slurry of calcium-containing compound may be fed into the recycle stream prior to entry to the absorption unit. After withdrawal of the recycle stream, if any, additives (e.g. ammonia, calcium carbonate, muriate of potash and trace elements) may be added to the fertilizer suspension. A magnesium or aluminium salt, e.g. magnesium sulphate, may be added prior to addition of ammonia in order to prevent reversion of phosphate to insoluble forms on neutralization.
