Abstract
881,141. Overhead cranes on ships. LEGRAND, P. March 3, 1958, No. 6778/58. Class 78 (4). A travelling crane for loading and unloading ships comprises uprights 7a, 7b running on rails 6a, 6b extending longitudinally of the upper deck 4 of a ship on both sides of the hatchways, the uprights supporting a pair of transverse rails 11a which are of a length substantially equal to the maximum width of the ship and which support at least one loadlifting carriage 12. Each carriage is provided at each end with hooks 18, 19 or other loadengaging means and is supported on three pairs of rollers 16a, 16b, 16c so as to be capable of projecting beyond at least one end of the rails 11a to carry the corresponding loadengaging means beyond the end of the rails, as shown. Electrically-driven winches 23a, 23b for raising the load-engaging means are provided on each carriage. The crane may be driven along rails 6a, 6b and each carriage may be driven along the rails 11a by electricallydriven endless cables or by rack and pinion means. Each carriage may support a pair of hooks at each end and the hooks may support a pair of load bars, Fig. 2 (not shown).
