A mobile lifting device adapted to run on tracks between rows of multi-storey storage compartments comprises a frame 1 mounted on idler wheels 9 and hydraulically driven wheels 10 and having a pair of uprights 7 along which forks 15, supporting a carrier 30 providing tracks 31 for a trolley 32, are movable. The trolley 32 is provided with a raisable load support 47, whereby loads may be raised from or lowered on to supports in the storage compartments. The forks 15 are raised by a pair of rams 18, are interconnected by a tubular member 23 and are secured to a pair of coupled endless chains 25 in casings 26. The trolley 32 is moved along the tracks on the carrier 30 by a cable 43 and a drum 40, Fig. 9, which is driven by a reversible hydraulic motor 41 mounted on the carrier 30. The load support 47 is connected to the trolley 32 by pivoted links 49 and is raised relative to the trolley by an hydraulic ram 50. An operator's control cabin 34 is secured to the carrier 30. In operation, pins on the ends of the carrier 30 are engaged in holes at the sides of the appropriate storage compartment, the load support 47 is raised relative to the trolley 32 which is then moved into the compartment, the trolley wheels 38 running on the lower flanges of C-section rails at each side of the compartment, and the support 47 is lowered to deposit the load on the upper flanges of the compartment rails. The hydraulic rams and motors may be replaced by electric motors.
