Abstract
880,960. Crutches. BESSANT, C. L. Oct. 2, 1959 [July 4, 1958], No. 21447/58. Class 81 (2). A crutch comprises a supporting stem 1, at least the upper end of which is tubular, a hand grip arranged intermediately on the stem, an arm-pit rest 18 mounted on a tubular shank 17 slidable longitudinally within the upper end of the stem 1, a pair of guide bars 30 carried by the rest, one on each side of the stem to slide through a guide block 31 and spring means 35 for supporting the arm rest when under load. In a modification, instead of using a single enclosed spring the weight is taken on two springs, each carried on one of the guide bars and, in this case, the tension of the springs is made adjustable by sleeves, screwed into the guide block and against which they bear. If desired a form of hydraulic dashpot may be incorporated designed to give restrained downward movement of the arm rest but free upward movement.
