880,797. Automatic control systems for textile machinery. T.M.M. (RESEARCH) Ltd. March 18, 1960 [Dec. 24, 1958], No. 41639/58. Class 38 (4). The thickness of a textile sliver leaving the retaining and drafting rollers 10, 11 and 12, 13 respectively of a drafting apparatus is maintained constant by passing the sliver between measuring rollers 14, 15 whereby variations in thickness moves the roller 14 relative to the roller 15 to move the slider 16 of a potentiometer to produce a signal representative of the thickness of the sliver, the signal being compared with a reference signal from a potentiometer 18 in a valve amplifier 20, the resultant signal being integrated with respect to time in an integrator 21 from where it is fed to an amplifier 22 associated with a motor 23 arranged to drive the rollers of the drafting apparatus, a motor speed reference signal 24 being fed into the amplifier 22 and a tachogenerator 25 driven to the rollers 10, 11 provides a feedback signal to the amplifier 22. The signal representing thickness of the sliver may be obtained by means of a variable capacitor.
