Abstract
995, 343. Lap forming machines. COTTON, SILK & MAN-MADE FIBRES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. March 13, 1962 [March 15,1961], No. 9396/61. Heading D1N. [Also in Divisions G1 and G3] A scutcher, incorporating a thickness control system as disclosed in Specification 936,178, is modified so as to compensate for the moisture content of the incoming material by altering the relative positions of the thickness detector 36 and the calender roller 14. A transducer 36a of the thickness detector is mounted on a pivoted arm 43 positioned by a screw 44 driven through a worm-and-wheel 46, 47 by a servomotor 45. The moisture content of the material is determined by the resistance between a calender roller 15 and calender rollers 14, 16 forming one arm CD of a bridge ABCD, which is balanced by a non-linearly wound feedback rheostat 49, adjusted by the motor 45 which is energized through an amplifier 53 by the out-of-balance voltage BD of the bridge.
