880,639. Gastroscopes. TSEPELER, J. A., WILLIAM-WILLMONT, M. N., SLAVIN, I. A., ROSENFELD, E. B., and USHAKOV, B. I. June 30, 1959, No. 22370/59. Class 81 (2). A gastroscope with a flexible stem is made to bend in one plane only, but the tip carrying the objective is made rotatable, both movements being effected by controls placed at the proximal end, adjacent to the eyepiece. The distal end of the flexible stem is connected, through wires 7, to racks 8, 8 at the proximal end, so that, by rotating a gear-wheel 9, one is pulled while the other is pushed, with consequent movement of the stem. For rotating the distal end, a tubular head 15, enclosing the objective lens and prism, is connected through gearing 14, 13 and a flexible rod 12 to a wheel 16, adjacent to the eyepiece. Rotation of this wheel consequently causes a corresponding change in the field of view. The transmission of light rays through the stem is accomplished by internally reflecting prisms.
