Abstract

1,231,015. Endoscopes. OLYMPUS OPTICAL CO., Ltd. 22 July, 1968 [21 July, 1967; 22 Sept., 1967], No. 34812/68. Heading A5R. An endoscope, particularly adapted for use in the bronchi, comprises a control housing, an elongated flexible tube, and a forward end portion containing a stiffening stay, a control mechanism controlling wires for movement of the forward end portion in a desired direction, and into a desired radius of curvature, being located in the control housing. The forward end portion is capable of curvature within the angle (A), Fig. 11, (not shown) by movements of the control mechanism effected through control wires 38, 39, Fig. 12, slidably fitting into non-contractable tubes 40, 41, the tubes being composed of tightly helically coiled wires and fixed at the control housing and the forward end portion. An elongated stay 37 prevents contracton of the forward end portion when curvature takes place. The forward end portion includes a lens barrel 30 containing a cover glass 31, an objective lens 32 opposedly related to an observational optical fibre bundle 34, and an illuminating optical fibre bundle (35). An alternative embodiment, Fig. 3, discloses a three control wire forward end portion control system, enabling the forward end portion to be curved in any direction. The wires 17, 18, 19 are connected to manually rotatable discs 20, 21 within the control housing and enclosed in non-contractible flexible tubes (25, 26, 27), Fig. 4, (not shown). A flexible stay (16) is also included to prevent contraction of the forward end portion. An observation optical fibre system is also includes comprising an objective lens 5, and an ocular 7, opposedly related to opposite ends of a fibre bundle 6. An illuminating optical fibre system 8 is also incorporated. In addition, a liquid injection tube :10 is included for introducing anaesthetic, for instance, into the bronchi, and a forceps introduction tube 9, from which the forceps may be withdrawn and a sucking device attached to remove phlegm &c from the bronchi. A coarsely helically wound steel strip (28), Fig. 7 (not shown) may be provided around the flexible part of the forward end of the tube 9 to prevent the tube closing when the forward end portion 3 of the endoscope is bent.
