Abstract

993,325. Bronchoscopes. AMERICAN CYSTOSCOPE MAKERS Inc. May 3, 1962 [May 10, 1961], No. 16986/62. Heading A5R. A flexible, surgical optical instrument, comprising a bundle of transparent fibres for conducting light to the field being observed and for conducting an image to an eyepiece and also having means for conveying oxygen to its distal end, has control means for deflecting the distal end portion. In one form described the fibre bundle comprises a central section 36, Fig. 2, the distal end 41, Fig. 3, of which receives an image from a lens system 59 while its proximal end face 40, Fig. 2, is observed through an adjustable eyepiece 33. This section of fibres is surrounded by an outer section 37 which conveys light from a source placed adjacent to end face 42 to a glass cylinder 60, Fig. 3, and so to the field under observation. The fibre bundle is made sufficiently rigid for insertion by being surrounded by oppositely wound spirals of steel strip 45, 46, 47 and a threaded union 54 is provided for the admission of oxygen, this being passed along the instrument tube to an apertured collar spaced from its distal end. The tube is made fluid-tight by a sheath 55 of polyvinyl chloride and the portion beyond the oxygen outlet is made more flexible than the section between the said outlet and the eyepiece. By this means the objective end of the instrument may be directed to one side or the other by wires 28, 29 attached to it and tensioned or released by a handwheel 26 which actuates slides 19, 20 connected to the proximal ends of the wires. In a modified form the outer sheath and spirally wound reinforcement are separate from the actual instrument, which is passed through it when required, and, in this case, the distal end of the sheath carries a pivoted deflector member (see Fig. 10, not shown) connected to an additional control knob, and this is employed to provide additional angular displacement of the extreme tip of the instrument. Specifications 993,322 and 993,323 are referred to.
