A hand substitute has rigid fingers mounted to move in planes oblique to each other so that, on contraction, the finger tips converge as they move towards a thumb, which is rigidly attached to the hand. In the preferred form the thumb b is rigidly fixed to the hand a and the fingers c, d are mounted on mutually inclined pivots e, f and are moved by a worm k engaging wormwheels g, h, the worm being rotatable by a cord l, m,. If desired, the thumb may be made adjustable into to or more positions one position being such that the finger tips meet each other at the thumb tip.
