Abstract

880,579. Cable and wire couplings; direct connections between conductors. A.E.I. LAMP & LIGHTING CO. Ltd. June 1, 1960 [June 2, 1959], No. 18840/59. Class 38 (1). In a connection between two wires or cables, such as a wire 1 and a lead-in wire 3 of a capless lamp 4, the wire 1 is secured in one end of a sleeve 2 having a flattened portion with a hole 5 therein through which the wire 3 is threaded or bent into contact with the sleeve. The assembly is then drawn into an aperture 7 in a supporting body 6 of, for example, ceramic or hard rubber, so that the walls of the aperture press together the wire 3 and the sleeve. Alternatively, the sleeve 2 may be omitted, the end of wire 1 in this case being flattened and provided with a hole. In the case of a stranded cable, the strands are first soldered or welded together. More than one connection may be accommodated in the body 6 as shown in Fig. 5. The mouths of apertures 7 are formed with lips 9 past which the connections are forced so that the lips retain them in the body 6 which in this case is necessarily of semi-flexible material.
