Abstract
879,832. Magnetic separation. SOMOGYI, F. P. Oct. 8, 1958 [Oct. 24, 1957], No. 38258/57. Addition to 824,643. Class 117 The arrangement described in the parent Specification is modified in that the agglomerates are moved by a magnet or magnets the poles of which lie in a circle or helix. In Fig. 1, magnets 13 which rotate in the direction shown cause clusters 14 of magnetic particles to be formed from the material 11 being treated. Air or other gas, which may be heated, enters the duct in which the clusters are formed and assists in removing the weakly magnetic particles from the clusters, these particles then passing from the machine at 17; the strongly magnetic particles leave at 18. The duct comprises a wall 15 of non-magnetic material and a member 16 of a magnetic material. A further embodiment, Fig. 2, includes a rotatable magnet 21 which forms clusters 22 of magnetic material and draws them along the inside of the upper surface of a tapering non-magnetic duct 20. A magnetic member 23 forms a return path for the magnetic field, and the separated particles leave the duct at 24, 25 respectively. In Fig. 4, the starting material passes from a hopper 26 into a rotating drum 28 and is acted on by a helical magnet 29, the strongly magnetic material travelling along the drum towards a shoot 30. The weakly magnetic material is discharged at 31 due to the tilt of the drum. A rotating magnetic field may be used in place of rotating magnets and the rotating drum may be replaced by pneumatic means for activating the material. The surface along which the clusters are drawn may be roughtened or undulating.
