879,611. Aircraft landing lights. AVIATION, MINISTER OF, and THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 31, 1959, No. 29703/59. Classes 75(2) and 75(4). An airfield lighting unit for facilitating landing comprises a flat base member rigidly supported on a fixed support and an optical bench consisting of lamp or lamps, a filter divided horizontally into two parts of different colours and a screen having a horizontal slit, so that in operation a beam of light is produced divided horizontally into two portions of contrasting colours, the bench being carried by adjusting members allowing its orientation on the base member to be adjusted. Each lamp is fixed to a mounting member in pre-set location, each mounting member being held in fixed relation to the bench. In the form shown, the optical bench consists of three lamps 18 held on plates 38 fixed in slots in a frame on the bench, a filter strip 19 of ribbed glass divided into a red upper half and a clear lower half also carried in channels 22 in a frame on the bench and a plate 20 also carried in channels on a third frame at the front of the bench. The filter 19 and plate 20 may be vertically adjusted in the channels. The bench is carried by three supports 27, 28, 29 engaging in sockets on a base frame so as to be vertically adjustable thereon. The lamps may be of the sealed beam type and separate filters may be used in place of a common filter. Specification 830,043 is referred to.
