Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formulae:-<FORM:0879237/IV (b)/1> (wherein R is hydrogen or acyl, X is a double bond between C5 and C6 or a saturated linkage between C5 and C6 of the "allo" type, R1 is lower alkyl containing less than seven carbon atoms) together with a process for preparing the unesterified compounds by reducing the corresponding 3-ketones with sodium borohydride. Examples detail the preparation of 4,4-dimethyl-19-nor-D 5-androstene-3b ,17b -diol, its diacetate, dipropionate, dibenzoate and dicyclopentylpropionate, 4,4,17a - trimethyl-19-nor D 5-androstene-3b ,17b -diol, its 3-acetate, propionate, benzoate and cyclopentylpropionate, and the corresponding androstane compounds (prepared by saturation of the C5-C6 bond and the foregoing 3b ,17b -diols).
