Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formulae : <FORM:0854034/IV(b)/1> and <FORM:0854034/IV(b)/2> wherein R and R2 are lower alkyl of less than 7 carbon atoms, R1 is hydrogen or an acyl group and X is a double bond between C4 and C5 or a saturated linkage characteristic of the allo series, together with a process for their preparation by treating the corresponding 3-keto compound with an alkali metal double hydride reducing agent, e.g. sodium borohydride. Examples detail the preparation of 2,2-dimethyl-\se4-androstene-3,17b -diol, its diacetate, dipropionate, dibutyrate, dibenzoate, the corresponding 2,2,17-trimethyl-2,2-dimethyl-17-ethyl- and 2,2-dimethyl-17-propyl\se4-androstene compounds and their saturated (androstane) analogues.
