Abstract
The invention comprises 2-hydroxymethylene-19-nor-testosterone, its 17a -methyl and ethyl analogues, and a process for the preparation of 2-hydroxymethylene-19-nor-testosterone and its 17a -alkyl derivatives (the alkyl group containing less than seven carbon atoms) by reacting the corresponding 2-unsubstituted steroid with ethyl formate in the presence of sodium hydride, preferably in an inert organic solvent, e.g. benzene, and under an inert atmosphere, e.g. nitrogen.
