Abstract

879,094. Free piston compressors. MAREP, S. N., OLLIER, J. G. H., and GROSSHANS, G. F. Feb. 5, 1960 [Feb. 6, 1959], No. 4185/60. Class 7(2). [Also in Group XXVIII] A diesel motor for actuating compressor pistons 7, 7<SP>1</SP> (see Group XXVIII), comprises opposed pistons 5, 5<SP>1</SP> within a cylinder 1 enclosed by a casing 2, scavenging pistons 6, 6<SP>1</SP> carried by the outer ends of pistons 5, 51 and connected totogether by synchronizing racks 9, 9<SP>1</SP> and a pinion 10 and to the compressor pistons by rods 8, 81; the cylinder 1 having scavenging air ports 3 and air inlet ports 21, 21<SP>1</SP> through which air is forced by the pistons 6, 61 during their inward strokes effected by a cushion of compressed air in each of spaces 20, 201, a fuel injection device 18 and exhaust ports 4. To start up the motor, spaces 20, 201 are connected by a duct 26 to a compressed air supply 42 and during normal working cushion pressure is regulated by a known device 22 comprising a three-headed spring-biased vertical slide valve 23 having the space 24 between the upper and middle head connected by ducts 26 to the cushioning spaces 20, 20<SP>1</SP>, the space 22b between the middle and lowermost head being connected by a duct 27 and a one-way valve 28 to the casing 2 and the lowermost face 22d of the bottom head being vented to atmosphere. In operation an increased piston stroke results in an increased cushion pressure which lifts the valve 23 against a spring 25 and connects ducts 26, 26a to atmosphere until equilibrium is reached. Conversely, a decreased piston stroke results in a decreased cushion pressure which allows the valve 23 to descend and scavenging air to pass from duct 27 to duct 26 and hence to spaces 20, 201.
