Abstract

878,594. Etching. PITTSBURGH PLATE GLASS CO. Nov. 11, 1959 [Nov. 12, 1958], No. 38221/59. Class 100(2) (Also in Group XXIII], Ground plate glass is prepolished prior to abrasive polishing by treatment with an aqueous solution containing dissolved acid hydrogen, fluorine and ammonium atoms in an amount sufficient to afford substantial concentration of ammonium bifluoride, the ratio of dissolved hydrogen atoms to dissolved fluorine atoms being between 0À5 and 1À0, allowing the solution to remain on the glass surface for a period long enough to render it substantially transparent and removing the solution and reaction products from the glass. A preferred example of the attaching solution is H 2 O 100 parts (16%); HF 150 parts (24%) and NH 4 FHF 375 parts (60%). A number of variations of these percentages are referred to, with the results of tests, together with the use of other acids, such as nitric, phosphoric, sulphuric or hydrochloric acids, to replace part of the hydrofluoric acid.
