Abstract
878,433. Mechanical switches, without quick action. DON-LAN ELECTRONICS Inc. Jan. 22, 1960 [Feb. 2, 1959], No. 2519/60. Class 38 (5). A switch, particularly for switching H.F. currents, comprises a ring-shaped movable contact supported within a passage by an operating bar moving in the passage, the ring having its axis perpendicular to the axis of the passage, and movement of the bar to one end position causing the ring contact to bridge the end portions of diametrically, opposite fixed contacts. In one embodiment (Fig. 2) the switch is adapted for insertion in a coaxial cable, having threaded connectors 12, 14 for the outer conductor and terminals 11, 13 for connection to the central conductor. The movable ring contact 31 is a loose fit within a longitudinal slot in the operating bar 15, which slides in a transverse passage 16. In each end position, the bar 15 rests on shoulders 20 and is located by spring-loaded balls engaging a groove in the bar 15. In the " on " position the terminals 11, 13 are bridged by the ring contact 31 which has a diameter slightly larger than the spacing of the terminals. The ring is thus distorted a little, ensuring good contact pressure, no contact bounce, and resistance to vibrations, and as the ring is urged between the terminals slight rolling occurs, the contacts thus being self-cleaning. In a second embodiment (Fig. 7) a double-pole change-over switch has rings 59, 60 connecting respective input contacts 47, 48 to one or other of a respective pair of output terminals 40, 41 or 42, 43.
