A coupling device for connecting a nuclear reactor control rod 1 to a winding cable 2, comprises a tubular part 5 on the rod 1, a sleeve 9 slidably mounted on the part 5, and a cylindrical part 3 secured to the cable 2 and engageable within the part 5, the tubular part 5 having in its wall three symmetrically disposed apertures 6 each containing a ball 7, the cylindrical part 3 having an annular recess 11 for engagement by the balls 7 when the sleeve 9 occupies the position, shown in the Figure, in which it retains the balls 7 in their engaging' position, and the sleeve 9 having an internal annular recess 10 registrable with the apertures 6 upon axial sliding movement of the sleeve, whereby the balls 7 can move outwardly relative to the part 5 and out of engagement with the recess 11. Inward movement of the balls 7 is limited by spherical portions 8 on the walls of the apertures 6 and the sleeve 9 has an internal annular groove 14 for engaging the balls 7 when the sleeve is positioned to retain the balls in engagement with the recess 11. The latter has a sloping side 15 which, when the cable 2 is tensioned, forces the balls 7 into the groove 14 to lock the sleeve 9 which is preferably provided with an external groove 13 for remote handling thereof.
