[Also in Division G6] A coupling between upper and lower parts 31, 32 of a nuclear reactor control rod comprises a casing 35 slidable on the lower part 32 to an extent limited by axial slots 36 receiving the ends of a pin 37 secured to the part 32, the casing being biased by a spring 38 acting on a casing flange 40. In the coupling engaged position, Fig. 2, the pin 37 is held in the centre of the slots 36 by a latch 41 pivoted in a slot 42 in a sleeve 43 secured to the part 32, the latch having a 90 degrees notch at each end, one notch having latching engagement with the flange 40 whereby upward movement of the casing 35 is restricted. In this position balls 44 contained in holes in the sleeve 43 prevent the withdrawal of an enlarged head 47 of a nick 46 on the upper part 31. A plunger 48 biased by a spring 49 is carried within the sleeve 43. To disengage the coupling the part 31 is moved downwards to push the casing 35 and disengage the flange 40 from the latch 41, the head 47 simultaneously depressing the plunger 48 so that a claw 51 therein rotates the latch to the Fig. 3 position. When the part 31 is raised the spring 38 lifts the casing the full extent of the slots 36 so that a groove 57 in the casing is opposite the balls 44, Fig. 4, and the head 47 may be withdrawn therethrough. Simultaneously, the flange 40 turns the latch 41 to the vertical position. To re-engage the coupling the part 31 is lowered to depress the casing 35 whereby the balls leave the groove 57 and eventually the head 47 depresses the plunger 48 whereby the claw 51 rotates the latch 41 into the Fig. 2 position.
