Abstract

908,059. Reactor control rods. REYROLLE & CO., Ltd., A. Feb. 9, 1960 [Nov. 10, 1958], No. 36100/58. Class 39 (4). [Also in Group XXV] Control rods are suspended above passages in the core of a reactor by means of latches each operated through a direct mechanical connection by an associated mechanism responsive to abnormal conditions in the reactor. Fig. 2 shows the upper end 16 of a control rod and a disengaged latch comprising a tube 14 containing a plunger 10, balls 19, and a retaining sleeve 29. When the latch is engaged the sleeve is lifted clear of the balls by a ledge 30, the balls project under a shoulder 28, and plunger 10 falls to lock the balls in position. Any rapid fall in coolant pressure in the reactor makes a bellows 5 expand, which raises plunger 10 and releases the control rod from the latch. Fig. 5 shows a latch comprising a tube 31, a plunger 33, balls 42 and levers 45 carrying more balls in a cage; the latter balls engage a slot in the control rod wall. Lifting of the plunger allows the levers to move inward, the balls rolling on surfaces 50 and 52.
