Abstract

897,458. Reactor pressure vessels. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Jan. 22, 1960 [Jan. 29, 1959; March 23, 1959], Nos. 2528/60 (Divided out of 897,450) and 10064/59. Class 39(4). In a gas-cooled nuclear reactor, each stand pipe leading to a fuel element channel is sealed with a biological shield plug which is mechanically locked and provided with electrical contacts to indicate the positions of the lock components. Thermocouple leads pass through the plug from the fuel elements. As shown, the plug 6 is locked in the standpipe 2 by the balls 10 and sealed by rings 8, 9. To withdraw the plug vertically upwards from 2 the bolt 21 is urged downwards by the spring 23, upon pressure equalisation at the plug upper surface by the refuelling machine. With 21 at its lowest position, the ball 10 registers with the recess 24 and moves radially inwards. The sleeve 16 is then pulled upwards relative to the plug part 6 by the hoisting members 61, 62, 63 and the balls 10 are withdrawn from grooves 5 into grooves 14. Spring 17 is compressed and plug 6 finally moves upwards. The separation of contacts 48, 49 indicate the movement of 16 from the locked position. The corrections of controls 70 and 45 indicates that the safety lock is free and the movement of 21 downwards from the locking position is indicated by the separation of contacts 44, 69.
