Abstract

1306806 Fuelling reactors UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 21 Sept 1970 [22 Oct 1969] 51874/69 Heading G6C A fuel element assembly comprises a fuel element section 1 releasably coupled at its upper end to a non-fissile section 2 consisting of a seal plug 8 and a neutron shield sleeve 4. The section 1 includes a fuel element cluster 7 and an upstanding waisted projection 6 engageable by balls 5 normally retained by a locking sleeve 10 in the position shown, so that the section 1 is locked to the section 2. The sleeve 10 forms the lower end of a tie member 9 connected to the plug 8. The sleeve 4 may slide axially on the sleeve 10 but is normally prevented from so acting by a pin 13 retained by clips 14. To refuel the reactor the entire assembly is lifted and transported to a coolant pond where the pin 13 is removed. Whilst lowering the assembly into the pond and just prior to the assembly abutting the pond bottom a device engages the sleeve 4 to prevent its further movement so that it moves relatively to the sleeve 10 and the balls 5 come opposite a larger diameter surface 16 in the sleeve 4. On further movement of the sleeve 10 after the section 1 has reached the pond bottom the balls 5 roll downwardly over the projection 6 and the largest diameter surface 17 in the sleeve 4 comes opposite the balls. Lifting of the section 2 now causes the balls to ride over the enlarged head of the projection 6 and enables the section to be separated from the section 1. The original section 2 may now be lowered on to and locked to a new section 1.
