Abstract

1,204,125. Fuel elements. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. 4 Dec., 1967 [2 Dec., 1966], No. 54198/66. Heading G6C. In a nuclear reactor, the vertical fuel pin assemblies are subjected to the lifting thrust of the upward flowing coolant. The assemblies are retained in position by a releasable lock in the base. The fireclay leg 14, of the fuel assembly framework rests in the bore 16 of the supporting base 17. The balls 20 are urged from the hole 19 into the recesses 18 by the rod 22 slidable in 14. The balls in this position, lock the assembly to the base 17. To release the assembly, the rod 22 is raised out of engagement with the balls which return to the hole 19. The lips 21 prevent the escape of each ball from the leg 14.
