Abstract

Class 64(2) [Also in Group XXVIII] In a diffusion pump, the return line for the condensed vapours flowing to the boiler is provided with a device to allow flow of the condensed vapours while preventing the flow of uncondensed vapours. A plug 1 provided with a piston head 2 is housed in a cylinder or well 3 which acts as a liquid reservoir, an O ring seal 4 being provided. The plug has a central duct 5 which communicates with a duct formed between the surfaces of the plug 1 and cylinder 3 by the stepped bottom 6 of the plug, this latter duct communicating by a drain passage 8, main body 7 and tube 10 with the pump boiler. When the pump is in operation condensed vapours from a condenser 9 flow through the duct 5 to the pump boiler and from the reservoir in the .well 3 between the duct 5 and drain passage 8 which prevents the flow of vapours. The duct 5 is tapped at 12 to facilitate removal of the plug for cleaning. The plug 1 may be in the form of a set screw, provided with a central axial hole, without threads on the major portion of its shank, but a few threads under its head, the plug being screwed into the cylinder and sealed by means of a flat washer.
