Abstract

876,592. Slip couplings. BIRFIELD ENGINEERING Ltd. Jan. 23, 1959 [Jan. 30, 1958], No. 3037/58. Class 80 (2). An overload slip clutch comprises rollers 7 located in radial slots in a driving sleeve 2 and urged inwardly by a spring ring 8 into engagement with grooves 5 in a driven member 3, the rollers riding out of the grooves on overload. The driving sleeve 2 is formed on a member 1 having jaws 1a forming part of a Hooke's joint. Longitudinal movement between the driving and driven members 1, 3 is prevented by a plug 11 fast in the member 3 and carrying a nut 16 and washer 17 located in a counter-bore 15 and abutting a shoulder 13 of the member 1. A retaining ring 20 and sealing sleeve 21 locate the spring 8 and retain grease within the clutch. Counter-bore 15 is also packed with grease and sealed by a dished washer 18.
