In a nuclear reactor power plant, heat is transferred from the reactor to the heat exchanger by means of a granular cooling and moderating agent circulated between them. The reactor and exchanger are mounted in fixed positions within a casing rotatable round them and filled with the granular agent which is moved continuously between them. The granular material may be graphite, silicon carbide, alumiuim or zirconium.
