Abstract
772,404. Turbines. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. Sept. 2, 1955 [Oct. 27, 1954], No. 25333/55. Class 110 (3). [Also in Groups XXXIV and XL (a)] To improve the extraction of heat from a nuclear reactor by means of a boiling liquid, the reactor is rotated about an axis whilst it is in operation, so that centrifugal force reduces the amount of liquid and solid particles ejected from the reactor with the vapour. Fissile material, e.g. enriched uranium, mixed with H 2 O or D 2 O is contained in a hollow oblate spheroid body 5 mounted on a shaft 1. Turbine blades 14 are secured to this shaft on either side of the reactor and steam from the reactor drives these blades to rotate the reactor and to drive a generator. When the reactor is started, it is empty of liquid (and fissile material) and this flows in through pipes 19 while a motor drives the shaft 1, and during operation condensate is returned through these pipes. When the reactor is operating, water in two annular troughs 9, 11, support the rotating parts, with the aid of fixed water-bearing surfaces 17<SP>11</SP>, Fig. 2. Steam leaving the reactor passes through spokes 6. In several modifications described, the reactor is driven by one set of turbine blades 67, the power turbine being on a separate shaft.
