Abstract

875,778. Projectile fuzes. AVIMAT A. B. June 18, 1959 [June 25, 1958], No. 20989/59. Class 9(1). A safety device for a projectile fuze comprises a member 1 housing a transverse slide 7 blocking a flash passage from a primer 3 to a detonating charge 9, when the member 1 is screwed into a casing 8 containing the charge 9. The member I has a threaded neck for connection to the fuze, the primer 3 being screwed into the neck above an axial passage filled with a composition 14. The lower side of the member 1 is closed by a disc 6 with a central aperture. Balls 16, 17 placed in a passage 18, which extends obliquely to the slide engage recesses 20 to lock the slide in the obturating position. Springs 19 holding the balls in the locking position are retained in the passage 18 by a split ring 11 of spring steel, the ends of which extend into a recess 13 in the member 1. Passages 15 in the slide are midway between the ring 11 and its centre and are filled with the composition 14. On firing a projectile fitted with the device, the slide, due to inertia, presses against the disc 6 during acceleration in the gun barrel. When acceleration ceases, the centrifugal forces produced by the rotation of the projectile having caused the balls 16, 17 to move outwards, the slide 7 moves to one end of its groove bringing one passage 15 into alignment with the primer 3. One of the weights 23 housed in the slide enters a recess 24 in the member 1 to prevent the slide returning to the safety position. The member 1 and casing 8 may be of light-weight metal such as aluminium alloy and the disc 6 and slide 7 may be of steel or iron.
