Abstract

Natural or regenerated protein textile materials are dyed or printed with an aqueous dispersion of one or more disperse azo dyestuffs which are free from sulphonic and carboxylic acid groups but which contain at least one group:- -Y-A-Z wherein Y represents -O- or -S-, A represents a substituted or unsubstituted alkylene radical and Z represents a halogen atom or an oxiranyl group. Specified radicals A are methlene, ethylene, trimethylene, propylene, hydroxytrimethylene, tetramethylene and a : b -dimethyl ethylene. Dyeing is effected at a temperature up to or above 100 DEG C., at a constant or varying dyebath pH value, and the dyebath may also contain ammonium sulphate, acetate or phosphate, sodium bicarbonate, sulphuric, phosphoric, formic or acetic acid, ethyl lactate or tartrate and anionic, cationic or non-ionic surface-active agents. Printing is followed by steaming and the printing paste may contain acid-binding agents and the usual thickeners and adjuvants such as sodium alginate, methyl cellulose, oil-in-water or water-in-oil emulsions, ethanol, urea and sodium m-nitrobenzene sulphonate. Specified disperse azo dyes are, among others, 1-phenyl- 3-methyl- 4-[41-(g -chlorob -hydroxypropoxy) phenylazo]- 5-pyrazolone, 1-[41-(g -chlorob -hydroxypropoxy) phenylazo]- 2-naphthol and 4-ethoxy- 41-(211 : 311-epoxypropoxy) azobenzene.
