Abstract

875,362. Assembling force fits. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 6, 1960 [Jan. 22, 1959], No. 2457/59. Class 83 (4). A method of adjusting the axial position of a rotatable shaft 1 within the predetermined limits of end play by the use of collars 7, 8 having an interference fit on the shaft and cooperating with a fixed machine part, e.g. a bearing 2, is characterized by placing the collars on the shaft with an interference fit in positions such that the end play is greatly in excess of the amount finally required, running the machine and marking the free-running position of the rotating parts, setting the shaft when stationary to the marked position, relieving the contact between collars and shaft and adjusting the collars axially to set the freerunning position at the mid point of the required end plate and finally restoring the contact between the collars and the shaft. The interference fit between the collars and shaft is relieved by supplying fluid pressure from passages in the shaft or collars to an annular recess 9 in the bore of each collar and the collars are axially adjusted on the shaft by means of nuts 6 screw-threaded on the shaft. To facilitate the axial adjustment of the collars a horseshoe-shaped templet having a thickness equal to half the desired end play is placed between the end face of the bearing 2 and each collar.
