Abstract

875,188. Automatic speed-control systems. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Dec. 30, 1958 [Oct. 2, 1957], No. 30835/57. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group XXXVII] Under motoring conditions, armature Ma is supplied from main magnetic amplifier MMA through the control winding of a braking magnetic amplifier BMA and rectifier RBI. When, however, the armature current falls below a predetermined value, the braking amplifier provides an output voltage which is applied to the armature through a rectifier RB2 and a non- linear resistor R. This results in reverse current flow through the armature and thus dynamic braking of the motor. The speed of the motor is automatically maintained at a predetermined value during motoring operation by means of a tachometer generator TG in series opposition with a reference source RS across the control winding of a magnetic amplifier CMA which supplies the control winding of the main amplifier through a rectifier RB3. In a modification, two magnetic amplifiers supply the armature, each through a rectifier and a non- linear resistor. The control windings of the amplifiers are in series opposition across a variable-voltage source. The magnetic amplifiers are rendered effective in turn for driving the motor in opposite directions.
