Abstract

731,809. Automatic current control systems. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Feb. 23, 1953 [Nov. 23,1951], No. 27637/51. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group XXXVH] The current passing between the generator and motor of a Ward-Leonard set, in which the motor may be regeneratively braked, is limited by controlling the excitation of the generator in accordance with the output of a pair of selfsaturating magnetic amplifiers. The amplifiers 6, 16. are connected via oppositely poled rectifiers 7, 17 across a shunt 3 which may be the commutating pole winding of either the generator 1 or the motor 2 of the Ward- Leonard set. The control winding of amplifier 6 is energized under normal motoring conditions ; that of amplifier 17 when the motor 2 is acting as a generator for regenerative braking. The amplifiers control windings 4, 14 of a further self-saturating magnetic amplifier 9 which controls the energization of the field 1a of the generator 1. A further field winding 1b opposes and annuls the field set up by winding 1a due to the standing value of output current of amplifier 9. The amplifiers 6, 17 are so biased that they normally operate below the first knee of their characteristic and if the current in their control windings exceeds a predetermined maximum they saturate heavily and by reducing or increasing respectively the excitation of the machine 1 limit the current flowing under generating or braking conditions. In a modification, rectifiers 7, 17 are omitted. Specification 630,124 is referred to.
